Atlanta Oncology Associates Physician Wins Top Prize in Physician Category
Dr. Erich G. Randolph of Atlanta Oncology Associates (AOA) — one of the largest radiation therapy groups in the Southeast — recently received an award in the Physician category as part of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s (ABC) 2008 Health Care Heroes Awards Celebration, held May 8 at the InterContinental Hotel & Resort in Buckhead.
“I am honored to receive such an esteemed award,” Dr. Randolph said. “It’s wonderful to be recognized as a leader in our medical community, especially among the world-class physicians practicing in Atlanta,” he said.
The evening began with welcoming remarks by ABC Publisher Ed Baker, followed by a keynote address by Bernie Marcus, Chairman of the Marcus Foundation and Co-founder of the Home Depot. WSB-TV’s Medical Correspondent Dr. Randy Martin emceed the awards segment of the event, introducing the finalists in each category and presenting the winner with their awards.
Dr. Randolph’s Physician award, which is open to both specialists and primary care physicians, honors one who “shows exemplary performance” in his or her field, has demonstrated “extraordinary service to patients and the community,” or exemplifies the “highest standards of the profession,” as described by the official Health Care Heroes Call for Nominations.
Awards in other categories went to Dr. Karen Glanz, Director of the Emory Prevention Research Center (Community Outreach); Alison Ellison, Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Program Coordinator, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Allied Health Professional); Dr. David Wright, Assistant Director of Emergency Medicine, Emory School of Medicine and co-director of the Emory Emergency Medicine Research Center, and Michelle LaPlaca, Associate Professor, Georgia Tech and Emory University (Health Care Innovation); and James Tally, CEO of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Lifetime Achievement).
Each year, the Health Care Heroes Awards recognizes outstanding achievements in Atlanta’s health care industry. According to the ABC web site, the awards “highlight true heroes in the field, often behind-the-scenes professionals who make significant contributions in health-care research, develop breakthrough therapies and disease treatments, and save and comfort lives.”
Dr. Randolph, whose special interests in radiation oncology are prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers, is a member of the American Cancer Society and served on the advisory Board at the Atlanta City Unit. He is also a member of the Medical Association of Atlanta, the Atlanta Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the Gilbert H. Fletcher Society, and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and is past Vice-Chair of the Grady Hospital-Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority.
