Our Patient’s Perspectives

Ed Davis, Educational director and retired college professorEd Davis, Educational director and retired college professor

The diagnosis of prostate cancer came for Ed Davis in December 2004. He admits to at first feeling overwhelmed. “I was shocked and scared as anyone would be,” says Ed.

His urologist referred him to Atlanta Oncology’s Cancer Center of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville. Throughout his treatment, Ed was able to maintain his normal activities despite a demanding work schedule.

“I had only minimal side effects. Dr. Quinn stayed on top of these and even frequently called at home to check on me. All of the staff and therapists at Atlanta Oncology gave me lots of personal care and made me feel welcomed every time.”

In February 2005, Ed’s treatment was completed. After a few weeks, his energy level was getting close to 100%, and he was again enjoying his active lifestyle, including his favorite sport of senior softball.

When recently asked how prostate cancer changed his life, Ed expressed, “It has given me a greater appreciation for being alive. I’m an advocate now for men to guard their health and get regular physicals.”

“Atlanta Oncology has a truly great staff. Everyone was very professional, efficient and couldn’t have been nicer.” These are the words that Gerald Peterson uses to summarize his treatment.

Like many men prior to radiation therapy, he had been initially anxious about the experience and how it would affect his daily routine.

“They always tried to work out what was best for me and my work schedule even accommodating any necessary adjustments,” he says.

Today, Gerald enthusiastically describes his health as “great, better than before treatment.” He further adds, “I’m enjoying my freedom to swim and shoot baskets with my kids and grandkids with no limitations.”

Gerald says that for him prostate cancer is no longer a concern. “I have total confidence that the doctors did everything right.”

Lester Schnake says he felt secure in choosing temporary prostate implants after his first consultation with his radiation oncologist at Atlanta Oncology Associates.

“Dr. McCord thoroughly described the options and answered all my questions,” said Lester.

When treatment began soon afterwards, he was immediately impressed with the professionalism of the doctors and staff. Lester describes them as doing a “magnificent job” as they worked together to carefully place the radiation for every treatment which gave him great comfort.

“I have been to an organization that delivered such high quality service and access. Everyone was so attentive and available for answers,” he remarks.

Lester recalls that side effects were never really an issue for him, noting he only developed some fatigue. He attributes his good experience to the expertise of the staff, who he compliments as always “careful, conservative and concerned.”
